In Total Eclipse, the visuals are not streaming off the CD as FMV like Microcosm or Cyberia. Instead, the powerful 3DO system renders them on the fly, mapping textures across surfaces in real time with unparalleled detail. Every enemy ship and building receives the same treatment, making the gameplay fully interactive.
Immersive Gameplay
You’re not just watching a demo – you’re in control, navigating through canyons, performing barrel rolls, and diving into valleys, all while enjoying excellent sound effects and a killer guitar soundtrack. Although the wailing music can get a little overbearing at times, it contributes to the overall intense atmosphere.
Visual Excellence and Early Success
Total Eclipse stands out as a visual gem among the early 3DO releases. It was another well-executed game from Crystal Dynamics on the 3DO, following the success of Crash N Burn. The game offers a range of paths through levels and a hit points system that rewards players for destroying enemies.
Challenging Controls and Gameplay Mechanics
However, the tight tunnels, ultra-touchy controls, and limited shield energy make dodging enemy fire and avoiding collisions very challenging at times. Additionally, the game lacks a save or password function, making it a frustratingly long playthrough unless you look up cheat codes to enable level select.
Replayability and Unique Experience
Despite these challenges, with 20 levels of increasing difficulty and a variety of power-up weapons, Total Eclipse delivers a smooth and slick space shoot-’em-up experience. At the time, it was unique and definitely a great start for the 3DO UK launch.
