StreetFighter 2 Turbo 3DO
StreetFighter 2 Turbo 3DO review
Overview
“Street Fighter II” is a renowned title in fighting game history, with numerous conversions and variants released across many consoles. The 3DO version holds the distinction of being the most faithful to the arcade original and was the last version to be released.
New Features and Enhancements
This version introduced four new characters, a “super” meter that charges during gameplay to unleash lethal combos, increased speed, and flawless arcade-perfect graphics and animations. The 3DO’s CD technology also significantly improved the original soundtrack, which was rearranged with new instruments, making it sound much more epic. The conversion of the voice samples from the arcades is also perfect.
Controller Challenges
Unfortunately, the standard 3DO controller was inadequate for this intense fighting game, requiring the use of the P button. Optimal play necessitates either the SNES 3DO adapter or the expensive CAPCOM Soldier joypad.
Minor Drawbacks
Some animations are missing in certain stages – for example, the elephants in Dhalsim’s stage are mute and immobile. Additionally, the blood from the portrait of defeated fighters was removed. However, stage loading times between fights are fast, with very little delay.
Hidden Features
To choose Akuma in Arcade mode, players can use the six-button press trick in versus mode or the three-second trick in character mode selection when playing against the CPU.
Collector’s Item
Street Fighter II TURBO on 3DO is a jewel in the 3DO crown, along with the Samurai Shodown conversion. The game is highly sought after in its original long box by collectors. It’s a shame that CAPCOM did not convert any other games to 3DO, as the console was clearly capable of handling these types of 2D fighting games.

Key points
- Certainly the best 2D fighting game for the 3D0
- Although the 2D sprites are somewhat dated, the colours are vibrant and these dated sprites are considered classic and started the 2D fighting game craze when released on SNES.
- CAPCOM added new characters and backgrounds with additional movement and details and visually vibrant super combos.
- Clear arcade perfect voices and classic fighting sounds
- The CD-quality music is better than the original
- The 3D0 controller is awkward to use for fighting games , but using an SNES controller add-on or the dedicated Capcom Soldier controller improves the experience significantly.
